Coming out in inverted commas because I'm unsure as to how I feel about the term. No one should feel obligated to declare their sexuality - it is a very personal thing. However, we live in a world where people are assumed heterosexual until they assert otherwise, and as such coming out is often a practical thing you have to do. How can we expect to obtain our rights, without first asserting that we exist?

Opinion: Perspective

I wonder if I'm close to my parents. I don't really miss them, and moving out from under their roof was a relief. I barely call or email. We talk, but they are the ones who initiate contact. Yet when I fly to their's, it's nice to see them. We have a very open, forthright relationship that should be the envy of many a family. It's been hard work getting here though, as reading some of my other posts will show. We still have our fights and we disagree frequently. Often I wonder if there's any point to working on my relationship with them, given that they'll quite possibly end said relationship if I ever tell them about my sexuality.

I've always said to myself that I need to be realistic about this - the chances of my parents accepting my bisexuality are pretty slim. One day I may have to live my life completely cut off from them, and I'll be fine like I always am. But a few weeks ago I met a bisexual Bangladeshi girl in Dhaka, one who's parents know of her sexuality and are supportive. We were talking about how "out" she is, and she shrugged and told me that her parents knew and were fine with it, so what does it matter if anyone else knows or not? If I'm honest, this made me feel more than a little jealous. It also made me realise that despite the distance between my parents and I, they mean an awful lot to me. And having them in my corner would be an incredible thing.

Coming to Terms with My Bisexuality, Part 3

Acceptance

Coming to terms with my sexuality has made me a truer, more complete person. It has also been a rather long journey - acceptance only came to me seven or eight years after I first realised that I was...for lack of a better word, different.

My path to self-acceptance began while I was at university in England. England, at least in comparison to Bangladesh, turned out to be the realm of high speed Internet. Not having to wait 10 minutes for a single webpage to load made me feel like all the knowledge in the world was at my fingertips. And no, I didn't exploit this for porn, the novelty of that what worn off by now. Instead, I immersed myself in a multitude of other areas, from re-learning French to finding out more about Linux (didn't make much headway there unfortunately). Over time, out of curiosity more than anything, I found myself exposed to non-erotic gay material. This led me to the concept of healthy, romantic same-sex relationships and the greater discourse that existed around rights and equality. For the first time, being attracted to the same-sex was cast in a positive light, albeit a secular one.

Opinion: This Guy's Bare Arse Does Nothing For Equality

I also wonder if he's breaking any laws...?

The photo above is from this year's Madrid Pride, also known as Mado 2012. Not from the actual parade, or from any parade related event. It was just a day in the week leading up to the parade, and this guy was out promoting his club. The posters on the wall next to him were all advertising Pride themed sex parties and gay saunas. A few minutes down the road was another guy with a mike encouraging the boys to "eat each other out". It seemed to me, the uninitiated novice, that Pride was all about men who were into men, and their sexual hedonism. Lesbians, along with many other members of the community, were conspicuously absent. While I was possibly just in the wrong part of Chueca, Madrid's gay district, my first brush with Pride has left me less than impressed.

Coming to Terms with My Bisexuality, Part 2

Confusion

I was painfully aware of my sexuality by age thirteen. I may not have known the word bisexual then, given my sheltered upbringing in Asia, but I had admitted to myself that I was unequivocally attracted to men as well as women. This admission, however, did not evolve into a full acceptance of self for years to come. I initially told myself that I could keep my attraction to men buried and hidden, and live my life pretending to be straight.

I had not diverged from this mindset when our family moved back to Europe a few years later. It was here that I first learned the word bisexual, and realised that it applied to me. Finally, I didn't have to be the weird gay boy who liked women, which is how I had described myself till then. In a way, having a word to describe my sexuality forced me to face it. I began to scrutinise my attractions, and realised just how much they confused me. I was certain that I was attracted to both men and women. Beyond that, everything was a mess, and describing my attractions through a coherent paragraph of text is still too difficult for me. Simplifying greatly, I can say that my physical and emotional attractions towards both men and women fluctuated considerably. This was very frustrating and even today, my attractions towards the two sexes are not constant. But I understand what drives them better now, and am mostly at peace with their dynamic nature. I won't delve into this further now, as I believe the dynamics of my bisexuality merit a post of their own.

Unfortunately, the confusion from my fluctuating attractions persisted for a long time, and hindered my acceptance of my own bisexuality. However, my struggles were not just internal as my home environment presented its own set of external problems. I was challenged not by any form of homophobia, but rather by my parents' even more restrictive beliefs. According to them, only a woman from a certain religious and cultural background would make an acceptable wife for me. Far off in the future of course, perhaps when I was 24. And I was to just sit, wait and twiddle my thumbs until then. Fortunately, this is not how my life played out, and at fourteen I found myself dating my first girlfriend. Everything was light, airy and happy for a while. On top of that, having a girlfriend seemed to lock me into heterosexual mode, and hey, I wasn't going to complain. But this relatively bright period of my life ended when my parents found out about her. To say they took the news badly would be an understatement. I can't recall exactly every line they threw at me over the next week, but somewhere in there they managed to warn me that "white people" might beat me up on the streets at any time for dating a "white girl". Without giving me a chance to recover from the shock of finding out that my parents thought we were living in apartheid South Africa, they went on to ask me why I would get involved with a girl whose family we knew nothing about. And then just as I was starting to worry that they wanted to to marry me off to this girl as punishment, they asserted that fifteen-year-olds were children who shouldn't have relationships, and completely stonewalled the topic of adolescent feelings and attractions.

Coming to Terms with My Bisexuality, Part 1

Realisation

Most of my writing will centre on the theme of coming out, my experiences of doing so and people’s reactions to it. But coming out for me has been a journey that started fairly recently, and I feel the need to explain how I actually came to this point. My next few posts will deal with how my life had been before I decided to come out, and how I came to terms with my bisexuality during this time internally at least.

I've known I wasn’t straight from around the time I was twelve or thirteen. Unfortunately, it all started with the Internet and porn, rather than something sweet like falling in love with the boy next door. We were living in Asia, and if I remember correctly, I was twelve when we got an Internet connection in our house for the first time. I want to be clear – it wasn’t like my life was suddenly saturated with porn. We had a dial up connection (which in itself should tell you how much porn I could've gotten my hands on...), and the computer was kept in my parents’ bedroom.

But still, sometimes I managed to sneak in when no one else was there and used the computer to look up porn. I already knew about heterosexual sex from school and from friends. It was actually the only kind of sex we knew about: homosexuality didn't really exist for us then. And while the word gay had on rare occasions been used as a slur at my previous school in Europe, its meaning never completely registered in my head. So at first, all I looked at was straight porn, and it didn't even occur to me that there might be anything else out there. But at some point, I decided I quite liked the men, and I’d quite like to see more of the men. It was never a fully articulated thought, even within my own mind. Consequently it never occurred to me this was a gay thought, let alone a wrong thought. So I saw more of the men. Then I saw the men together. It wasn’t some kind of revelation. I just thought hmm, that’s interesting, I would have never thought that you could or would do that.

Then my imagination took over. And that was the true revelation.

About Me and the Blog

I know there must be quite a few blogs like this on the web, but I've never come across one by a Bangladeshi, so I thought I'd write one myself.

A little bit of background on me.

I'm a bisexual Bangladeshi guy, 21 years old, Muslim, currently living and studying in England. I was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, but my family moved abroad in the early 90's when I was still very young. Since then, it's been a lot of back and forth between various countries around the world, with a few years spent in Bangladesh here and there.

As such, I'm aware that my life is not at all representative of the average Bangladeshi's. I last left Bangladesh about 4 years ago, and I've always been closeted when I was there. I couldn't tell you anything about the LGBT community in Bangladesh except for what I've found online. However, over the past few months I've been dealing with coming out to Bangladeshis, Muslims, and other people whom I once thought might respond badly to my sexuality. I'm writing with the hope that someone out there who's circumstances intersect with mine will find my personal journey vaguely useful. I know when I was younger and really, really closeted, and frankly, really, really alone, a personal account like this would have been comforting to read.

While I'm aiming to write about mostly my personal experiences, my posts might be peppered with my opinions on various LGBT issues now and again. I'm also keen on making this blog bilingual, but my written Bangla honestly isn't great. I'll try and do the same post in Bangla and English, but I doubt posts will be the same word for word.

And finally, I'm keeping myself and anyone I talk about anonymous for now. Details of dates, places and people will be vague.
